Departments




Office of the Librarian

The Librarian's Office is the central administrative office of the Houghton Library. As such it is responsible for the management of the library's public programs, for the administration of the Houghton Library Visiting Fellowships, for the oversight of the Harvard Library Bulletin and Harvard Review, for the liaison with the Harvard College Library and Harvard University Library, and for the coordination of the library's policies and procedures.

Harvard Library Bulletin

The Harvard Library Bulletin is published quarterly by the Harvard University Library. Publication of the Bulletin is made possible by a bequest from George L. Lincoln, Class of 1895, and by a fund established in memory of William A. Jackson.

The cost of an annual subscription is $35 (United States, Canada, and Mexico) and $41 (foreign). Single issues are $15.

Harvard Review

Harvard Review publishes poetry, fiction, essays, drama, graphics, and reviews. It is published twice yearly, in spring and fall, and is available by subscription and from select bookstores. E-mail for local listings.



Public Services

The Department of Public Services is responsible for the Houghton Reading Room, where items from Houghton collections are examined. Its staff provides access and reference services to readers, both in person and via e-mail, fax, or letter.

Technical Services

The Technical Services Department processes rare materials in various formats, and provides access to these materials through Harvard's various online catalogs.

Single manuscript records are displayed in HOLLIS (Harvard OnLine Library Information System) and are created using Houghton's Manual for Creating Single-Item Manuscript Records in HOLLIS.

Finding aids for the collections are displayed in OASIS (Online Archival Search Information System) and are created using the Houghton Library Encoded Archival Description (EAD) Guidelines.

Some materials can be accessed through VIA (Visual Information Access).

Collections

The Collections Department is responsible for oversight and management of the following: Early Books & Manuscripts, Modern Books & Manuscripts, Printing & Graphic Arts, Harvard Theatre Collection, Harry Elkins Widener Collection, Hyde Collection of Dr. Samuel Johnson and Early Modern Books and Manuscripts, Theodore Roosevelt Collection, and the George Edward Woodberry Poetry Room.

The Printing & Graphic Arts collection administers the Philip and Frances Hofer Lecture Series on the Art of the Book and, together with the Fogg Art Museum, awards every other year the Philip Hofer Prize for book and art collecting.

The Harvard Theatre Collection maintains a mailing list for announcements of exhibitions, lectures, programs, events, major acquisitions, and other information. To be added to the list, please send your mailing address, telephone, and e-mail address via htc@harvard.edu.
