Overview
The Japanese Collection of the Harvard-Yenching Library is rich in works on history, literature, and Japan's modern and postwar political, social, and economic development. It also contains the 6,500-volume Petzold Buddhist Collection, including a number of books published in the Edo period (1600–1867), some 200 manuscripts dating from the 14th century, and about 400 scrolls. Japanese works in Sinology are also comprehensively represented. The 15,000-reel microfilm collection of printed books of the Meiji period (1867–1912) is the only complete copy available in the United States. In conjunction with the Japanese-language holdings of the Harvard Law School Library, the Rübel Asiatic Research Collection of the Fine Arts Library, the Harvard Map Collection, and the Documentation Center on Contemporary Japan Collections of the Fung Library, the Japanese Collection of the Harvard-Yenching Library plays an important role in supporting all Japan-related teaching and research activities at Harvard.
Questions and comments, including requests for materials and inquiries about how to use the collection, may be directed to Kuniko Yamada McVey, Librarian for the Japanese Collection, at 617-495-3395 or via e-mail.
